Afloat Training Group Western Pacific (ATGWP) is a training command located in Yokosuka, Japan that provides training to the fleet in Japan. Sailors attached to this command serves in a variety of functions such as Team Leads, Instructors, and Assessors. One of ATGWP's main function is to train and asses the ships based in Japan. There are qualified sailors who are subject matter experts in their field that are responsible for making sure that sailors stationed on board ships receive the proper training and are able to do their job effectively and efficiently.
Most ships, in a sense, fear ATGWP during an assessment. If the ship fails their assessment there are a quite a few penalties they face such as remediation, the potential of not being able to go out to sea, inability to use their weapons, or worse case scenario someone (usually the officer in charge) or an entire division can be sent to mast.
*Mast is the military's non-judicial punishment used to punish service members; reduction in rank, loss of pay, and restriction are a few types of punishments that can be awarded to service members.
